  • Global trends in shipbuilding

  • An undeniable trend in shipbuilding is the growing number of orders for large and complex vessels. The pursuit of economies of scale is leading shipowners to order from Zaliv Ship Design.

More cargo being transported leads to lower unit shipping costs, which benefits all parties involved in the maritime supply chain.
In the container ship sector, vessels with greater capacity are constantly being built.

    Ship tonnage

Several vessels over 11,000 TEU are already in operation and orders have been placed for 14,000 TEU. A 16,000 TEU giant is already in development by Samsung, one of the largest shipyards in Korea and the world.

Shipping analysts do not even rule out the possibility of building a large container ship with an unrealistic tonnage of 22,000 TEU.

In the tanker sector, the largest ULCC has a tonnage of 550,000 DWT. Surprisingly, ships of this size need a very small crew to operate. A typical Aframax-class gas tanker (an oil tanker under 120,000 DWT with a beam of over 32.3 meters) requires a crew of 15, thanks to advanced devices and sophisticated electronics on board.

Giant cruise ships are also planned in the passenger ship category.

    Environmentally friendly

A new generation of OSVs, powered by gas and equipped with dynamic positioning capabilities and high power, are being built to operate in challenging deep sea conditions. Remotely piloted, state-of-the-art vehicles are also being built to operate in offshore oil and gas exploration and production.

There are also FSO, FPSO and FLNG, which embody advanced design and install sophisticated equipment in the limited space on board the vessel. In addition to ships, shipyards also produce all types of offshore structures, including platforms, derricks and other equipment for offshore installations.

There is also a trend toward building environmentally friendly ships due to the growing awareness of the need to reduce ship emissions into the atmosphere.

Shipyards are increasingly focusing on "green logistics" to reduce waste and pollution in their supply chain. There is a growing focus on green shipping, and shipyards are expected to work with shipowners and equipment manufacturers to produce energy-efficient ships.
